New Orleans Police have arrested the alleged gunman who opened fire on some teenagers as they were making their way home from a high school basketball game in Algiers last night.
Fourth District officers believe 17-year-old Alvin Alvarez shot another 17-year-old male and injured a 17-year-old female as they were leaving the game at about 9:20 last night in the 1200 block of L. B. Landry Avenue near L. B. Landry High School.
The male victim was shot in the leg, and the female sustained powder burns to the face and eyes because she was in close proximity to the gun.
Detectives worked through the night, and through interviews and further investigation, were able to identify the suspected shooter as Alvarez. Officers obtained an arrest warrant and located Alvarez at a relative’s home in the 1900-block of Pace Boulevard.
Alvarez was then taken to Central Lock Up and booked with Aggravated Battery by Shooting and Negligent Injury. He will also be booked with Carrying a Firearm at a School Sponsored Function in a Firearm-Free Zone.
Detectives believe there was a second perpetrator involved in the shooting and are asking anyone with information to contact the Fourth District at (504)658-6040, or to call CrimeStoppers at (504)822-1111.
“From the time this gunman opened fire on these teenagers to the time our detectives picked him up, only 12 hours had passed. Our team did a great job”, said Superintendent Ronal Serpas.
“And since our 4th District detectives believe this suspect had an accomplice, I want to ask people who know anything about this shooting to please contact police or CrimeStoppers. The victims deserve this, as do the people of New Orleans.”
